Wildlife in April

The wettest month of the Tanzanian year. The migration is moving through the central Serengeti toward the western corridor — the herd is harder to find because they disperse when water is everywhere, and tall grass hides the cats. That said, game viewing is still good for travelers who know what to expect. Resident lion prides hold territory year-round and don't migrate. Leopard sightings in the central Serengeti riverine forest actually improve because there are fewer vehicles competing. Elephant in Tarangire have dispersed into the bush but herds still find the Tarangire River. Birding is the year's standout: over 500 species are present, with intra-African migrants and Palearctic species in full breeding plumage. Several mobile camps close for the month and lodges run skeleton staff. The country is brilliantly green and the photography light is dramatic.

Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. April simply changes the spectacle.
