Wildlife in February

Calving season at full pulse. Roughly 500,000 wildebeest calves are born across the short-grass plains in a tight three-week window — typically the last week of January through the third week of February — at a peak of around 8,000 calves per day. The action is concentrated in a 1,500 km² strip between Naabi Hill in the east and Lake Ndutu in the west, including the Matiti, Hidden Valley, and Soit le Motoyok areas. Predator density is the highest of the year: Ndutu and marsh lion prides feeding daily, cheetah pairs running calves on open ground (you may see three or four hunts in a morning), spotted hyena clans working the herd edges. The resident wildlife in central Serengeti is unchanged — leopard, elephant, hippo, buffalo all present around Seronera — but the spectacle is south. Northern and western Serengeti remain quiet this month.

Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. February simply changes the spectacle.

Warm and largely dry. Daytime 28-31°C, nights cool to 16-18°C. Late-afternoon thunderstorms two or three afternoons a week — heavy for 30-60 minutes, then clear. Mornings are generally the most reliable game-drive window. Pack light cottons and linens for daytime, a fleece and beanie for early starts, a packable rain shell for storms, and closed shoes for any walking from camp. Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable. Roads are good across the south; the black-cotton mud doesn't usually start until the March long rains arrive.
