Wildlife in June
The migration is established in the western corridor and the Grumeti River crossings begin in earnest from mid-month. Grumeti crossings are smaller and quieter than the Mara crossings to come but the resident crocodiles are the largest in East Africa, and you may be the only vehicle at the scene. Resident game returns to dry-season patterns: predators concentrate at remaining water, visibility opens up as grass is grazed down, and the cats are easier to find. The northern Serengeti starts to wake up — the first mobile camps reopen at Kogatende by late June in anticipation of the herd's arrival. Tarangire is rapidly building toward its dry-season peak; the Tarangire River is becoming the only reliable water in the wider ecosystem and elephant herds of 200-plus are forming. Ngorongoro Crater is reliably good, as always.
Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. June simply changes the spectacle.
Weather and what to pack
Cool, dry, clear — the start of the long dry season and arguably the most pleasant weather of the year. Mornings can drop to 10-12°C at altitude (Ngorongoro Crater rim is colder; bring a real jacket), midday warms to 24-28°C, evenings cool quickly. Skies are mostly cloudless and the dust hasn't yet built up. Pack proper layers: fleece, light down or wool sweater, beanie, gloves for early game drives; light cottons for midday; rain shell is rarely needed but pack one anyway. Roads firm up across the ecosystem.
