Wildlife in July

The migration moves rapidly through the western corridor and arrives in the northern Serengeti — most herds reach the Mara River by mid-month. The first Mara crossings typically begin in the last week of July, with peak crossing activity from late July through September. Kogatende is the place to be: mobile camps along the river have positioned themselves for the season, the herd is concentrated, and the Sand River and main Mara crossing points are active. Resident game across the ecosystem is at dry-season peak: predator concentrations at remaining waterholes, leopard on the kopjes, lion prides territorial and visible. Tarangire elephant concentrations are at their year peak — herds of 300+ along the Tarangire River are common. Ruaha and Nyerere/Selous in the south are at their dry-season best.

Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. July simply changes the spectacle.

Dry, cool, dusty. Daytime 20-26°C, mornings can drop to 8-10°C at altitude — the coldest mornings of the year. Skies are generally cloudless; visibility is excellent (you can see for kilometres across the open plains). Dust is becoming an issue, particularly on the heavily-trafficked Seronera roads. Pack serious layers for dawn game drives (fleece, jacket, beanie, gloves), light cottons for midday, a dust buff or scarf for the roads, and a camera rain-cover to keep dust off lenses. Reef-safe sunscreen — the dry air sun is intense.
