Mara River crossings at peak. The herd oscillates back and forth across the river through August — multiple crossings per week are normal, and on a 4-night stay in the right Kogatende-area camp you can reasonably expect to witness 3-5 crossings. The most-used crossing points are along the Sand River and the Mara River bend below Kogatende; the Bologonja and Wogakuria sectors hold reliable predator concentrations. Big-male lion coalitions hold territory along the river; leopard sightings on the riverine fig trees are reliable; cheetah on the open plains north of Lobo. Resident game across the ecosystem is at its absolute peak. Tarangire elephant concentrations are at their year peak and predator activity at Silale Swamp is intense. Ruaha and Nyerere/Selous remain at dry-season best with far fewer vehicles than the north.

Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. August simply changes the spectacle.
