Wildlife in September
Crossings continue through September — the herd is split, with some animals already pushed into Kenya's Masai Mara, others still oscillating across the Mara River on the Tanzanian side. The crossings can still be excellent, and crowds thin measurably from mid-September onward. The dry season is at its most extreme: predator concentrations around remaining water are intense, the resident lion prides along the Mara are visible daily, and big-cat hunts are frequent. Central Serengeti is excellent for leopard and resident lion. Tarangire elephant concentrations begin to ease as the first hint of pre-rain humidity arrives; Ruaha and Nyerere/Selous remain at their absolute dry-season peak. Kilimanjaro climbing is at the year's best — dry, clear, summit success rates highest.
Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. September simply changes the spectacle.

A slight haze of dust hangs in the late-afternoon air across the central Serengeti — beautiful for photography but it softens long-lens detail. By late month the first hint of pre-rain humidity arrives. Pack the standard dry-season kit: fleece for mornings, light cottons for midday, dust buff, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. Rain shell rarely needed but pack one anyway.

Nyerere/Selous offers excellent walking safaris and boating on the Rufiji that the north doesn't. Tarangire elephant herds are still strong. Ngorongoro reliable. Mahale chimpanzee trekking still excellent. If you can't get into the north, a southern-circuit fly-in itinerary is the best alternative on the calendar.
