The Serengeti in October.
Excellent value compared to August. Game viewing still exceptional.
Wildlife in October
The migration starts to return south through October. The leading edge moves from Kogatende back through the central Serengeti — by late October the herd is around Seronera and pushing toward the Moru and Maswa areas. Crossings can still happen at the Mara River in early October if the season ran long; by mid-month the window has closed. Dry-season game concentration continues across the ecosystem and is arguably the best month for game viewing without the August crowds. Tarangire elephant concentrations remain strong through mid-month; by late October the first short-rains arrive and herds begin to disperse. Ruaha and Nyerere/Selous still at strong dry-season form. The northern Serengeti quiets as the herd leaves; the central is the place to be from mid-month onward.
Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. October simply changes the spectacle.
Weather and what to pack
Warming up as the long dry winds down. Daytime 26-30°C, mornings 15-18°C. Dust is at its dustiest through mid-month; the first short rains often arrive in the last week, dropping 20-40mm in afternoon storms. Skies start to show afternoon cloud build-up by late month. Pack lighter than August: a fleece for mornings, breathable shirts for hot middays, a rain shell for late-month storms, dust buff, sunscreen. Black-cotton mud isn't yet a problem; that arrives with the November rains proper.
We send a tailored packing list with your booking confirmation — by month, by region, and by lodge type. See our full Tanzania packing guide for the long version.
