Short rains begin — concentrated 30-90 minute afternoon thunderstorms rather than the day-long downpours of the long rains. The migration moves through the central Serengeti heading south; the leading edge reaches the southern short-grass plains and Ndutu region by late November. Birding picks up dramatically as intra-African migrants arrive and Palearctic species pass through. Resident game across the ecosystem is excellent and vehicles are sparse — many travelers wait for the December holiday rush. The northern Serengeti is largely empty; the central is in transit; the south is starting to fill. Tarangire continues to deliver — late-season elephant action plus the first dispersal of the herd as water becomes available across the wider ecosystem. Ruaha and Nyerere/Selous remain strong into the first half of the month, then begin their wet shoulder.

Whatever the season, Serengeti game viewing is strong year-round — resident lion, elephant, leopard, hippo and buffalo populations don't migrate. November simply changes the spectacle.
